SHILLONG, Oct 31: Various programmes across Meghalaya on Friday marked the 150th birth anniversary of Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel with the celebrations of the ideals of unity and national integrity, championed by the Iron Man of India.
In Shillong, a Unity March was flagged off by Rajya Sabha MP Rameswar Teli and Arts and Culture Minister Sanbor Shullai.
Organised by the Directorate of Sports and Youth Affairs, along with the NSS and NCC in collaboration with the District Administration, the march began from the State Central Library and concluded at Jawaharlal Nehru Stadium.
Teli, in his address, reflected on Patel’s historic achievement in bringing together over 560 princely states to form a united India.
He urged young people to follow Patel’s example of courage, discipline and dedication to national service.
Shullai then described Patel as the nation’s unifying force and called on the youths to uphold harmony, brotherhood and peace in pursuit of Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s vision of Viksit Bharat 2047.
The Shillong event featured floral tributes, a felicitation ceremony and traditional performances that highlighted Meghalaya’s cultural richness. Volunteers from MY Bharat, NSS, and NCC joined students and officials in the march, turning it into a vibrant show of collective spirit.
Similar observances also took place across the state as part of Rashtriya Ekta Divas. In East Garo Hills, police personnel, students and residents took part in a Run for Unity held across different police stations.
A joint run at Williamnagar, organised by the Superintendent of Police and the Commandant of the 5th Battalion MLP in association with the District Sports Office, brought together more than 500 participants—a stirring tribute to Patel’s legacy of oneness and resolve.
