MAWKYRWAT, Nov 2: In a development that might pose serious threat to Meghalaya’s internal security, the Garo National Liberation Army Regroup (GNLA-R) has allegedly started its operation in areas along the India-Bangladesh international border in South West Khasi Hills, serving extortion notes and threatening businessmen.
South West Khasi Hills Superintendent of Police, Banraplang Jyrwa told The Shillong Times on Sunday that on October 28, an FIR was received at Nonghyllam Police Station under Ranikor Civil Sub-Division from one businessman where he reported that he had received an extortion note of ₹5.5 lakh from the Garo National Liberation Army Regroup (GNLA-R) and subsequently received threatening calls from an unknown number.
The SP informed that based on this information and working on other credible intelligence inputs, police personnel from Ranikor circle together with the Special Cell of the Mawkyrwat Police were able to apprehend one main suspect identified as Mann R. Marak (25), a resident of Upper Rajapara village in South West Khasi Hills.
Based on his examination and confession, four more suspects including one minor were identified and arrested in the last few days. The accused were identified as Marson R. Marak (18) and Babulin D. Sangma (27) both residents of Upper Rajapara village; Tartus N. Marak (20) resident of Mulapat village under Ranikor Civil Sub-Division and a 16-year-old teenager, Jyrwa informed.
The SP also said that further investigation into the case is going on to ascertain their membership with GNLA-R and the role of any other GNLA-R members in this offence.
A case was registered at Nonghyllam Police Station under section 308(2)/351(4)/3(5)/113(3)(5) of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita.
