TURA, Nov 5: The recent promotion of a junior Anganwadi worker to the post of Supervisor under ICDS at Selsella Block in West Garo Hills has sparked controversy, with the senior-most worker in the same block vehemently opposing the move, terming it illegal and manipulated as it bypassed her rightful position.
According to a complaint filed to the District Programme Officer, ICDS, by Romeja Begum, the senior-most worker of Namibila Part-I, a junior Anganwadi worker, Imrana Sultana of Namabila Part-II, was allegedly granted an illegal promotion despite her being junior in service.
Romeja stated that she was appointed as Anganwadi worker of Namabila Part-I on May 15, 2006, whereas Imrana was appointed only four years later in 2010.
“Despite this clear and undisputed seniority gap, she has been illegally promoted, which is wholly arbitrary, unjustified, and contrary to the principles of natural justice. Promoting a junior employee over a senior one violates Article 14 and 16 of the Indian Constitution, which guarantees equality before law and equality of opportunity in matters of public employment,” Romeja said in her complaint.
Romeja further claimed that due to her sincerity and efficiency, the Namabila Part-I Anganwadi Centre was upgraded by the department in 2021, and she was awarded a certificate and a cash prize by the Meghalaya Government in recognition of her meritorious service.
Alleging that her junior’s promotion was manipulated and influenced by extraneous and biased considerations, Romeja urged the department to cancel the promotion, warning that she would be compelled to seek legal recourse if her grievance is ignored.
