Over two lakh tonnes of legacy waste recycled

SHILLONG, Dec 17: More than two lakh tonnes of legacy waste have been recycled from the Marten landfill site at Mawlai, which was overflowing at one point in time.
Urban Affairs Minister Sniawbhalang Dhar stated on Wednesday that the landfill is now almost empty, and the remaining legacy waste of 1.7 lakh tonnes will be cleared shortly.
The Marten site once had 3-4 lakh tonnes of legacy waste.
Dhar praised the firm selected for the recycling exercise for “doing a good job” and said the government is optimistic that the firm will clear the legacy waste within the stipulated time.
The Meghalaya government had earlier identified Nonghali as the proposed site for an alternative scientific landfill project
The minister said that the public hearing on the matter was conducted smoothly, and a committee has been constituted to negotiate the rate for the land to be acquired for the proposed scientific landfill site.
“The rates can be fixed only after the public hearing. The committee is trying to arrive at a rate for the land, as the public hearing has been completed,” he said.
The government also has plans to set up similar scientific landfill sites in the other districts of the state. Land for the purpose has been acquired in some locations, officials said.
