AMPATI, Dec 22: A man was beaten to death, allegedly by a jawan of a central security force, at Marpara in South West Garo Hills.
The incident occurred during a drunken brawl between two neighbours – accused Biswajit Hajong and deceased Manoj Hajong (36). Manoj left behind his three children. His wife died last year.
After the brawl, an injured Manoj was taken to the Betasing PHC and discharged after first aid. However, as he was experiencing severe pain soon after, he had to be rushed to the Ampati Civil Hospital. The next day, he was sent to the Tura Civil Hospital.
Sources claimed that the accused later admitted Manoj to the Holy Cross Hospital over the fear that a case has been registered with the police. The victim underwent two operations before succumbing to his injuries.
After the incident of assault which occurred on September 27, the mother of the deceased had lodged a verbal complaint. An FIR was lodged by a villager on October 12 when Manoj was on the verge of death.
Local residents were unhappy with the pace of police investigation even as the accused roamed free, securing an anticipatory bail. A group of villagers approached the Deputy Commissioner, following which instructions were given to the police to prioritise investigation.
Superintendent of Police Vikash Verma said investigation is on and the charge sheet will be filed soon.
“The case is in the final stages of investigation and statements of all available witnesses have been recorded. The accused has obtained an anticipatory bail from the District Court, which is why, he is yet to be arrested,” Verma said.
Meanwhile, a resident alleged that the village headman intimidated the victim’s family. The SP, however, said no complaint was received in this regard but the matter will be looked into.
