SHILLONG, Dec 24: Traffic congestion is crippling the travel experience for hundreds of tourists visiting Meghalaya’s capital during the Christmas and New Year festivities.
Key stretches of Shillong have become heavily jammed for most hours of the day. Long vehicle queues crawl at a snail’s pace or come to a complete standstill for extended periods, severely testing the patience of commuters and visitors.
Tourists have voiced frustration, calling the gridlock a major challenge during their stay. “We are unable to reach our destinations on time because of the traffic,” one visitor stated, echoing the concerns of many caught in the gridlock.
Another visitor reported that the drive from the IGP Point to a hotel near Police Bazar took nearly an hour due to severe congestion. The situation has been so trying that some tourists were seen taking naps inside their cars while waiting for traffic to move.
As the influx of tourists continues through the New Year, these recurring traffic woes underscore the urgent need for effective traffic management measures in Shillong, particularly during peak holiday seasons.
