MLA disburses Rs 10.76 lakh assistance to youths, schools, groups & PwDs

SHILLONG, Dec 26: North Shillong MLA, Adelbert Nongrum, on Thursday contended that leadership is about giving back to society rather than accumulating power or wealth, as he distributed financial assistance amounting to Rs 10.76 lakh to youths, schools, youth organisations and persons with disabilities under various government welfare schemes.
The assistance was provided under the Chief Minister’s Special Development Fund (CMSDF), Chief Minister’s Special Urban Development Fund (CMSUDF) and the Intensive Sports and Youth Development Programme (ISYDP).
A significant portion of the funds was extended to individual beneficiaries with the objective of promoting self-reliance and inclusive development.
Addressing the gathering, Nongrum stressed that a true leader must be prepared to face criticism and hardships while remaining committed to honesty and sincerity in public service.
He added that he does not believe in responding to negativity with negativity and reaffirmed his commitment to fulfilling his responsibilities with integrity.
To encourage youth entrepreneurship, the MLA provided financial assistance to seven individuals to help them start their own ventures. The beneficiaries included Kduplin Warjri for setting up a business shop (Rs 20,000), Luckycia Evenica Kharlong for a beautician venture (Rs 15,000), Banalarilin Kharnaior for the purchase of a tailoring machine (Rs 25,000), an educated youth for an Echowave sound system business (Rs 50,000), Daffeca Nongrum for bakery materials (Rs 11,560), Gremy Dopri for the purchase of a musical instrument (one guitar) (Rs 10,500) and Ebenezer W. Mairom for a food business or beauty parlour (Rs 50,000).
Under the CMSDF (MLA Category) 2024-25, which is currently awaiting approval, financial assistance was allocated to several institutions, including the Ri Bhoi Christian Fellowship (Rs 4,55,580), Riatsamthiah Sports and Cultural Club (Rs 1,03,539) and AWT Orphanage Home (Rs 62,900).
Support was also extended under the ISYDP, with ₹Rs 50,000 each sanctioned to Seng Samla for an anniversary celebration and to the Dunkin Cricket Club.
Additionally, under the CMSUDF 2025-26, the MLA distributed office equipment to strengthen institutional capacity, including three desktop computers worth Rs 1.32 lakh, two printers costing Rs 34,000 and three UPS systems valued at Rs 6,600.
