SHILLONG, Dec 31: The Urdu Society of India, Shillong, has expressed strong concern over recent incidents of vandalism and attacks on Christmas celebrations.
The statement from the Urdu Society of India, Shillong, comes amid reports of vandalism and alleged targeted attacks during Christmas celebrations across several states, which have triggered sharp political reactions.
The Society said that such acts not only hurt the religious sentiments of the Christian community but also undermine the spirit of communal harmony and peaceful coexistence that India stands for.
Recently, the Central Puja Committee (CPC), Meghalaya, had also condemned the spate of attacks on churches and members of the Christian community during the recent Christmas celebrations in various parts of the country.
In a statement, the CPC Meghalaya strongly condemned the incidents, terming them acts perpetrated by radical elements.
The Committee also urged state governments to immediately apprehend all culprits and initiate stringent and exemplary action against individuals and organisations allegedly involved in what it described as heinous crimes aimed at creating division among different religions and faiths in the country.
Opposition parties have criticised the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP), while the ruling party has maintained that law and order are being firmly upheld.
Reports of disruptions emerged from multiple states, including Madhya Pradesh, Kerala, Chhattisgarh, Assam, Uttar Pradesh, Delhi and Odisha, where Christian communities reported incidents of vandalism, intimidation and harassment during the festive period. While authorities stated that the situation remained under control, opposition leaders described the developments as part of a disturbing national pattern. (With inputs from ANI)
