SHILLONG, Jan 14: The Assamese community in Shillong celebrated Magh Bihu, the traditional harvest festival, with religious fervor and communal harmony at Lumsatsgi (Bishnupur) on Wednesday.
The festivities, held at the Namghar near Sankardev College, began with the lighting of the traditional bonfire, or Meji, where devotees gathered to offer prayers for prosperity. This was followed by Nam-Prasanga, a devotional session featuring hymns accompanied by cymbals and drums.
A major highlight of the event was the sharing of traditional delicacies, including pitha (rice cakes), laru (sweets), and doi-chira. Organised annually by the local community, the celebration serves as a platform to preserve cultural heritage and foster unity among the Assamese residents of the city.
