‘Only a portion of the PA Sangma Stadium is unsafe and not the entire stadium’

By Our Reporter

TURA, Jan 18: The DDMA on Sunday clarified that only a portion of the P A Sangma Stadium is unsafe and not the entire stadium as stated in a particular news report.
“It is hereby clarified that the District Disaster Management Authority (DDMA) has not declared the entire stadium or its surrounding area unsafe. The advisory issued by the DDMA specifically pertains only to the West Stand, where the retaining wall had collapsed earlier in June 2023 due to incessant rainfall. The advisory has been issued purely as a precautionary measure to facilitate repair and redevelopment of the affected section,” the clarification said.
According to the authority, the stadium remains safe for hosting sporting events, and no new structural issues or fresh damage have been detected.
The order is preventive in nature and aimed solely at ensuring public safety during the repair process, it added.
Meanwhile, the public has been requested not to be misled by the said news report and to rely on the official clarification issued by the competent authority.
Chief Minister Conrad K Sangma on Saturday clarified that recent reports questioning the safety of the PA Sangma Stadium were misleading and stemmed from improper interpretation of facts. Sangma said the issue related only to a specific portion of the stadium, namely the West Stand area, and not to the entire structure. He explained that the retaining wall in question had been constructed long before the current PA Sangma Stadium project was initiated and was not part of the new stadium construction.
