Deir AL-Balah, Jan 20: A 3-month-old Palestinian baby, Shaza Abu Jarad, died from hypothermia in Gaza on Tuesday, highlighting the dire humanitarian conditions in the war-ravaged territory as world leaders gathered in Davos to discuss President Donald Trump’s Gaza ceasefire plan.
Shaza’s family, living in a makeshift tent after their home was destroyed, struggled with cold, wet winter conditions and shortages of blankets, warm clothes, and fuel.
She is the ninth child to die from severe cold this winter, and over 100 children have died since the October ceasefire between Israel and Hamas, which allowed a surge of humanitarian aid but left electricity and heating scarce.
Trump’s Board of Peace, part of his 20-point ceasefire initiative, aims to address the Israel-Hamas conflict but may take on a broader global role, potentially rivaling the UN Security Council.
Invitations to world leaders have elicited mixed responses, with France declining to join at this stage and other nations reviewing the proposal. (AP)
