SHILLONG, Feb 16: Mendipathar Railway Station — the only station in Meghalaya selected for the Centre’s Amrit Bharat Station Scheme (ABSS) — has achieved 73% physical progress in its modernization drive.
Part of the Rangiya Division, the station is being upgraded as part of a broader initiative to revamp railway infrastructure across the country. According to Northeast Frontier Railway (NFR) Chief Public Relations Officer Kapinjal Kishore Sharma, 92 stations have been identified for redevelopment within the NFR zone, with 60 located in the Northeast.
The regional breakdown includes 50 stations in Assam, four in Tripura, and one each in Meghalaya, Sikkim, Arunachal Pradesh, Manipur, Mizoram, and Nagaland. Haibargaon railway station in Assam became the first to be completed under the scheme, inaugurated by Prime Minister Narendra Modi in May 2025.
The redevelopment focuses on phased improvements, including enhanced passenger amenities, better station access, upgraded waiting halls, modern toilets, lifts, and escalators. The project also provides free Wi-Fi, advanced information systems, and improved facades, while promoting local entrepreneurship through the ‘One Station One Product’ initiative.
Officials expect the upgraded stations to serve as socio-economic hubs, boosting connectivity and local employment across the Northeast.
