SHILLONG, March 2: The Meghalaya Pradesh Mahila Congress on Monday launched a signature campaign in Shillong demanding transparency from the NDA government over allegations linked to the “Epstein files.”
The move follows remarks by Congress leader Rahul Gandhi questioning reports that the Prime Minister is referenced in documents associated with the late Jeffrey Epstein. The Congress argues that such mentions, if verified, warrant a formal response from the highest office.
At the center of the controversy are emails within the Epstein records that reportedly refer to the Prime Minister’s 2017 visit to Israel. While the Ministry of External Affairs has dismissed the claims as baseless and the “trashy ruminations” of a convicted criminal, the Mahila Congress maintains the issue requires further scrutiny.
Launching the campaign, Meghalaya Pradesh Mahila Congress President Joplyn Scott Shylla said the women’s wing decided to act following reports that certain leaders from the ruling alliance were allegedly named in the documents. She asserted that any public representative facing such allegations should resign until the matter is cleared. Shylla added that women leaders felt a responsibility to speak up on matters involving moral credibility and public trust, noting that such references could impact India’s ethical standing and foreign policy.
Mahila Congress teams have begun visiting various localities in Shillong to gather signatures. The collected endorsements will be submitted to the Prime Minister’s Office (PMO) to press for a formal response and an inquiry.
