SHILLONG, March 14: The Mathematical Society of Meghalaya (MSM), in collaboration with the Mathematics Department of Shillong College, celebrated International Pi Day 2026 on Saturday at the Shillong College Auditorium.
According to a statement here, the event also served as the first general body meeting for the newly registered society.
The programme brought together about 50 participants, including mathematics teachers from various universities, colleges and schools, alongside students. Dr. Sainkupar Mn. Mawiong, Assistant Professor at NEHU, spoke on the global importance of Pi Day, while retired mathematics teacher Runjit Marbaniang shared insights into the specific challenges and difficulties students face in the subject at the school level.
Technical Advisor at the North East Centre for Technology Application and Reach (NECTAR), Dr. Collin Z. Renthlei, who was the chief guest, highlighted various projects funded by the organisation to support regional development.
Throughout the session, speakers spoke about the urgent need for the new society to uplift mathematics education across the state, from the primary to the university level.
On the occasion, Shillong College principal Dr. S. Khongwir officially inaugurated the general body meeting, where members discussed the society’s rules and approved the executive committee for the 2026-2029 term.
The society resolved to focus on its core motto, ‘Think, Solve and Grow’.
