SHILLONG, April 4: With an aim to reduce traffic congestion at the Anjalee petrol pump junction, Arts and Culture Minister Sanbor Shullai on Saturday inaugurated a new link road behind the NEFA Secretariat in the Cantonment area.
The 0.185-km stretch was constructed by the Public Works Department (Roads) at a sanctioned cost of Rs 3.36 crore. The road will operate as a one-way thoroughfare and includes dedicated pavements for pedestrians.
Inaugurating the link road, Shullai stated that the same is expected to ease traffic in the clogged area by approximately 15 per cent.
Highlighting the government’s broader efforts to tackle the city’s traffic issues, the minister provided updates on the Shillong-Dawki road project.
He noted that the four-lane expansion from Rilbong to Upper Shillong is nearly complete, and plans are under way to extend the four-lane stretch from Rilbong to Barik. Shullai remarked that these infrastructure upgrades would enhance connectivity with Bangladesh, facilitating smoother trade and the transportation of goods.
He added that the improved road network would significantly boost the tourism sector by providing better access to key destinations such as Shillong Peak, Elephant Falls, Cherrapunji and Dawki. Furthermore, better road capacity is expected to reduce vehicular pollution and ensure safer traffic movement.
