SHILLONG, April 15: The state government has identified 59 locations across Meghalaya where cremation pyres are required and has proposed an initial financial assistance of Rs 1 lakh per crematorium.
In an affidavit filed before the High Court of Meghalaya, the state government stated it has begun verifying the sites listed in a status report submitted by the Amicus Curiae.
This process involves consultations with local communities, deputy commissioners and autonomous district councils.
According to the government, the State Level Committee (SLC) has prioritised land identification in villages facing space constraints.
The committee noted that while the government will provide Rs 1 lakh per unit, community contributions may be sought if the total construction cost exceeds this amount.
The SLC is currently monitoring the implementation of the court’s directives and holding regular meetings to compile data on land availability and infrastructure needs.
During the hearing, the Division Bench also heard submissions from the Amicus Curiae and Tyllilang Myrthong, president of Seng Khasi Hima Mawsynram.
The matter remains under the court’s supervision to ensure consolidated reports and funding proposals are submitted promptly.
