MAWKYRWAT, April 15: Mawkyrwat MLA Renikton L. Tongkhar on Wednesday inspected several sites in Rangmaw and Domjyrti villages in South West Khasi Hills to plan for road and parking infrastructure ahead of two major religious gatherings scheduled for 2026.
The sites are being prepared for the Jingiaseng Samla Khasi-Jaintia Presbyterian Synod Sepngi annual meeting and the Youth Assembly of the Church of God (Meghalaya and Assam).
Accompanied by village leaders, PWD (Roads) officials and church elders, Tongkhar noted that the Synod meeting site currently lacks road connectivity. The survey aimed to design approach roads and parking lots to prevent traffic congestion during the events.
The MLA proposed a minimum of two entry and exit points, with separate routes for attendees from East and West Khasi Hills to ensure smooth traffic flow.
Following consultations, a proposal will be submitted for a new road from the Umngi River Bridge to Rangmaw. This route would be 6-7 km shorter than the existing road via Jakrem. “This road is not only meant for the Synod 2028; it will be one of the very important roads in our area and a blessing for our people as it will also contribute to promoting tourism,” Tongkhar said.
