SHILLONG, April 16: The Meghalaya unit of the BJP has called on the State government to reconsider and reassess the proposed luxury resort and spa project at Lumpongdeng Island in Umiam, emphasising the need to protect the island’s fragile ecology.
Addressing reporters on Thursday, BJP chief spokesperson Mariahom Kharkrang clarified that the party is not demanding cancellation of the project. Instead, it has urged the government to implement strict precautionary measures to preserve the island’s pristine natural environment for future generations.
“The untouched beauty of Lumpongdeng Island is its greatest asset. People can admire its charm even without setting foot on it. Certain places should remain untouched,” Kharkrang said.
He stressed the importance of dialogue between the government and project opponents to resolve differences and avoid mistrust.
He also highlighted that Umiam Lake and Lumpongdeng Island are not just tourist spots but vital parts of Meghalaya’s ecological and cultural heritage.
While acknowledging the importance of tourism for economic growth, Kharkrang cautioned that any development must undergo thorough ecological assessment to prevent long-term damage.
Kharkrang further raised concerns over the increasing use of government land for tourism projects. He suggested that the government should instead partner with private landowners in Ri-Bhoi district for high-end tourism ventures, as large tracts of prime land are privately owned.
“Government land should be reserved for public infrastructure and essential projects, not commercial tourism,” he said.
The BJP also recommended that tourism projects ensure a significant share of jobs for local residents and urged the government to reduce high land registration fees to help local entrepreneurs compete fairly with external investors.
The party reiterated its support for balanced development that protects Meghalaya’s natural heritage while promoting inclusive economic growth.
