BAGHMARA, April 19: Social activist Nilbath Marak has raised concerns over the entry of migrant workers and traders into South Garo Hills without valid documentation.
During a visit to the Nongalbibra area on Saturday, Marak found several labourers and traders operating without mandatory labour or trade licences.
The influx occurs despite heightened security concerns in the region. West Garo Hills recently enforced strict entry protocols following consultations with civil society organisations, church elders and local leaders. While similar measures are expected across other districts, the region is currently struggling with a shortage of labour that has reportedly stalled several development projects.
“We have just been through a very difficult period in Garo Hills, and it was expected that the entry of migrant workers would be screened thoroughly,” Marak said. “However, I found many entering for work and trade without requisite licences. This is questionable and must be investigated to avoid a repeat of past unrest.”
The activist blamed the state government and local administration for failing to monitor illegal entry, which he described as a threat to the local population and resources.
“There are mechanisms to check this. How can we confirm the identity of those entering the state? There are check gates to ensure legal entry, and their operations should be inquired into. People should not be allowed to enter Garo Hills without verification,” Marak added.
He demanded that authorities rectify these lapses and ensure only individuals with proper screening and documentation are allowed entry for work or trade.
