SHILLONG, April 19: The Nationalist Congress Party (NCP) has urged the regional forces in Meghalaya to form a united front to unseat the NPP-led MDA-2 government in the 2028 Assembly elections.
NCP observer and North East coordinator Sanjay Prajapati said the party is inviting all local political players to come together in pursuit of “real development” for the state. Drawing from precedent, he pointed to the earlier Meghalaya Progressive Alliance as proof that such unity among regional forces is both workable and effective.
He asserted that consolidation of regional parties would significantly strengthen the opposition space, enabling them to mount a credible and coordinated challenge to the ruling coalition. According to him, this strategy is central not only to countering the MDA-2 but also to facilitating the NCP’s return to governance.
Prajapati said that the party will soon initiate discussions with other regional stakeholders, including negotiations on seat-sharing arrangements, stressing that an early start will be crucial to shaping a viable alliance.
While acknowledging the party’s limited footprint in the state, he invoked the legacy of the late P.A. Sangma, noting that similar alliances had succeeded in the past and could be revived if political will aligns.
Targeting the NPP, he alleged that nearly ten years of its rule have been marked by corruption and a failure to deliver tangible progress in sectors such as infrastructure, healthcare, and education.
Referring to the protests led by the Green-Tech Foundation against a luxury resort project on Lumpongdeng Island, Prajapati said the growing public resistance signals a shift in mood, adding that the government now faces sustained scrutiny from an increasingly aware citizenry.
