SHILLONG, April 21: The Pynursla Civil Sub-Division administration has closed the Shillong-Dawki road between Laitlyngkot and Mawlieh following a rockslide on Saturday that killed two people.
In a public notice issued Tuesday, Sub-Divisional Officer (SDO) Gautam Warjri stated the stretch would remain closed to all vehicular traffic until further notice due to the persistent risk of falling rocks and unstable terrain.
“Despite round-the-clock clearance works, fresh rockslides continue to occur, posing serious risks to commuters and workers,” Warjri said. The road was deemed unsafe after the April 20 incident at the Mawlieh stretch (Chainage 35+450 km) of NH-206, where a rockslide struck a vehicle, resulting in two fatalities.
The SDO directed that the entire stretch from Laitlyngkot to Mawlieh will remain closed until a thorough safety inspection is conducted and the road is certified fit for public use. Authorities attributed the heightened risk to ongoing excavation activities and prevailing weather conditions.
Commuters are advised to avoid the route and use alternative roads. The order instructs the police, NHIDCL, and PWD (Roads) to ensure strict enforcement, including the installation of barricades and warning signs.
Any violation of the order will attract legal action, the SDO warned, adding that the directive is in the interest of public safety.
