SHILLONG, April 27: Seng Samla Mawlai Motsyiar on Saturday organised an awareness programme at the locality community hall focusing on the ill effects of substance abuse and the available avenues for skill development and self-employment.
The event, which drew 57 local youths, highlighted the Deen Dayal Upadhyay Grameen Kaushalya Yojana (DDU-GKY) under the Mawlai C&RD Block. It was supported by the Chief Minister’s Youth Development Scheme (CMYDS) 2022–23.
Seng Samla Mawlai Motsyiar general secretary Sonny Marwein informed participants that the DDU-GKY scheme offers free skill training in 14 trades. Selected candidates will undergo a four-month fully funded training course in Guwahati, followed by government certification and job placement assistance.
The session also covered initiatives under the Meghalaya State Skill Development Society (MSSDS), including opportunities for overseas employment in countries like Japan and Germany.
Resource person Banrilyn Tynhiang, Project Director of New Hope De-addiction Centre, spoke on the dangers of drug and alcohol addiction. She urged the youth to remain vigilant and safeguard themselves, particularly when moving outside the state for training or work.
Skill Development Officer Audrey Mary Khonglam provided further guidance on enrolling in government schemes and accessing support to launch independent ventures. The programme included video presentations of success stories featuring youths who have established their own livelihoods through these vocational programmes.
Other resource persons included Block Coordinator (DDU-GKY) Ibania Langstang.
The organisers stated that the initiative was designed to equip the youth with the necessary awareness and practical skills to lead self-reliant lives.
