SHILLONG, April 30: Residents of East Jaintia Hills on Wednesday urged the state government to expedite the resumption of coal mining in Meghalaya, stating that the ban imposed by the National Green Tribunal (NGT) in 2014 has caused widespread economic distress.
Speaking to reporters, local resident Riodame Shadap said the region has struggled for a decade following the halt of mining activities, which served as the primary livelihood for thousands. He noted that the prolonged restriction has led to a sharp decline in income, affecting miners, transporters, and small business owners alike.
“Since the ban, the economic condition of the people has worsened. Poverty has increased, and many families are finding it difficult to sustain themselves,” Shadap said.
Highlighting the social impact, he added that financial constraints have forced some parents to withdraw their children from school, reflecting the long-term consequences of the downturn on education and local welfare.
The residents demanded that the government implement regulated and legal mining to ensure compliance with environmental laws while safeguarding livelihoods. They stated that reopening the sector under proper guidelines would revive the local economy and restore employment opportunities.
Warning of potential unrest, Shadap said continued inaction could compel residents to resort to democratic protests. “We urge the government to listen to the people and act swiftly, failing which we may be forced to launch an agitation,” he added.
