Agri minister calls for eco-friendly tech to boost hill farming in state

SHILLONG, May 9: Agriculture Minister Timothy D. Shira has called for the adoption of eco-friendly and farmer-centric technologies to ensure long-term agricultural sustainability and enhanced productivity in Meghalaya.
Speaking during a visit to the ICAR Research Complex for NEH Region on Friday, Shira stressed the importance of sustainable hill farming, climate-resilient practices and the improvement of fisheries.
He also noted the need for farm machinery specifically suited to the state’s hilly terrain.
According to a statement here, the interactive meeting was attended by Dr. G. Kadirvel, Director of ICAR RC for NEH Region, and Dr. AK Mohanty, Director of ATARI Zone-VII, along with officials from various state departments.
Dr. Kadirvel briefed the Minister on technologies developed for the Northeast, including Integrated Farming System (IFS) models that offer diversified livelihood opportunities.
Regarding millet cultivation, he suggested mapping suitable areas across districts to promote climate-smart farming and nutritional security.
The institute has developed comprehensive ‘Packages of Practices’ for various crops, which Dr. Kadirvel said can be shared with the state government for wider dissemination among the farming community.
Meanwhile, Dr. Mohanty highlighted various field-tested technologies recommended for adoption to improve agricultural resilience.
