SHILLONG, May 13: Laban-Mawprem MDC Ricky Shullai on Wednesday urged the state government to declare November 1, the death anniversary of Rev. JJM Nichols Roy, as a state holiday.
Calling on Chief Minister Conrad K. Sangma in this regard, Shullai stated that the late leader, widely regarded as the architect of the Sixth Schedule, made immense contributions toward protecting the identity and rights of indigenous tribal communities.
Speaking to reporters after the meeting, Shullai described the discussion as “positive” and expressed hope that the government would seriously consider the proposal. He noted that he had previously raised the demand during a session of the Khasi Hills Autonomous District Council (KHADC).
Shullai remarked that the Khasi community continues to benefit from the constitutional safeguards provided under the Sixth Schedule, which remains essential for preserving customs, traditions and land rights.
He added that Rev. Nichols Roy’s role in framing these protections deserves greater public awareness, especially among the youth.
The MDC also called for strengthening KHADC laws to uphold the vision of founding tribal leaders and urged the government and civil society to organise awareness programmes on the matter.
While no formal assurance was given, Shullai said he remains optimistic that the proposal will be considered in the interest of preserving Khasi history and heritage.
