SHILLONG, May 18: Senior BJP leader and MLA AL Hek on Monday said that local technical expertise and a traditional understanding of river systems are essential for protecting the Wah Umkhrah and its tributaries.
Speaking on the river’s condition, Hek argued that local knowledge is more effective than relying solely on external consultants. He noted that residents familiar with the area better understand the natural flow of tributaries and can guide riverfront protection efforts more accurately.
Hek cited an instance near the CRPF camp where local dorbars intervened to stop construction activities that obstructed the river’s natural flow. He maintained that such local insight is vital to ensuring development does not disrupt the river system.
Addressing the Polo Shopping Mall, Hek dismissed claims that there was a lack of interest in shop allotments. He stated that many people had approached him for space and their applications have already been recommended to the Shillong Municipal Board.
