SHILLONG, May 31: P Patel is preparing to file a contempt petition against the Principal of St. Edmund’s School, alleging that the institution has failed to implement a High Court of Meghalaya order to restore his son’s admission.
The move comes as the family grapples with the fear that the child could lose an academic year. While Patel pursues contempt proceedings, the school is reportedly seeking to challenge the High Court judgment before a Division Bench.
“We are in total confusion. Every day there is tension in the family. All we are thinking about is our child’s future,” Patel said. He noted that other schools have refused admission as the academic session is already well underway.
Patel also expressed concern over potential repercussions for the child if he eventually returns to the school, citing advice from others who warned of a difficult environment. Despite the legal victory, he claimed there has been no support or intervention from the state government or the Education Department.
“For us, this is not about winning or losing. We just want our child to study. Every day that passes is a loss for him,” he added.
In a judgment delivered on May 22, Justice Wanlura Diengdoh quashed the cancellation of the child’s admission, terming the school’s decision “arbitrary, disproportionate, and violative of the principles of natural justice.” The court had directed the school to complete admission formalities and allow the student to attend classes within one week.
