BOGOTA, June 1: Pro-Trump lawyer Abelardo de la Espriella took the lead in Colombia’s presidential race after winning nearly 44 per cent of the vote in the first round, ahead of progressive senator Ivan Cepeda, who secured less than 41 per cent. The two will compete in a runoff on June 21.
Known as “El Tigre,” De la Espriella campaigned on a tough anti-crime platform, promising a crackdown on drug trafficking and criminal groups, while drawing inspiration from the security policies of Nayib Bukele and aligning himself with US President Donald Trump.
Analysts say De la Espriella is now the favourite to win, likely benefiting from support from other conservative voters. Cepeda, an ally of President Gustavo Petro, faces a difficult task expanding his appeal beyond left-wing supporters before the decisive runoff vote. The result reflects growing public concern over crime and security. (AP)
