World No Tobacco Day event in SWGH school raises awareness

AMPATI, June 1: The District Tobacco Control Programme (NTCP) and National Oral Health Programme (NOHP), South West Garo Hills, observed World No Tobacco Day 2026 at Bidamong Educational Foundation School, Dengasi, on Monday. The event aimed to raise awareness about the harmful effects of tobacco and protect the youth from addiction.
Delivering the keynote address, District Nodal Officer (NTCP & NOHP) Dr Cornelius R Marak highlighted the serious health risks of tobacco and nicotine, particularly for children and adolescents. He explained how the tobacco industry targets young people through marketing and flavored products, urging parents and teachers to work together to promote tobacco-free lifestyles.
SDSEO Ampati, Emphul Ch. Marak, who attended as the chief guest, encouraged students to stay focused on their education and avoid harmful substances. Chief Legal Aid Defence Counsel Sengatchi Marak briefed the gathering on the legal provisions under the Cigarettes and Other Tobacco Products Act (COTPA) and the importance of its enforcement.
The programme included an awareness skit on drug abuse and a traditional Wangala dance performed by students. Prizes were also distributed to the winners of a quiz competition held to promote health awareness.
In addition to the awareness session, health officials conducted general check-ups, dental screenings, and screenings for tuberculosis, non-communicable diseases, and HIV. Mental health counseling was also provided, and dental kits were distributed to the students.
Others who spoke during the event included SDMHO Dr Ladya M Marak, JRDO CN Marak, and school authorities, all emphasising the need for a healthy, tobacco-free environment.
