MAWKYRWAT, June 9: The District Disaster Management Authority (DDMA), South West Khasi Hills, has issued a safety advisory following forecasts of heavy rainfall, thunderstorms and landslides in the region.
The district administration has advised residents to avoid visiting rivers, streams, and waterfalls.
Commuters have been urged to exercise extreme caution on hill roads and highways, where landslides and rockfalls are likely, particularly at night.
During storms, the public is advised to stay indoors and secure loose objects like roofing sheets and farming equipment. The DDMA also recommended switching off electronic appliances during prolonged lightning and warned against standing under tall trees or near power lines.
Farmers have been told to avoid working on slopes or in open fields during adverse weather. The administration further directed that any livestock deaths be reported to the Veterinary Department within 24 hours.
People have also been encouraged to monitor updates from the India Meteorological Department (IMD) and use the emergency helpline 112 for disaster-related assistance.
