SHILLONG, June 22: Residents of Pongtung village in East Khasi Hills on Monday raised concerns over the construction of a culvert under the Shillong-Dawki road project, alleging poor workmanship and inadequate drainage that have led to the flooding of local homes.
According to residents, rainwater from the newly constructed culvert and drainage system is being diverted into residential areas, causing significant waterlogging. “The water flows directly into our homes whenever it rains. During heavy rainfall, the entire area gets inundated,” a resident said.
The situation has caused particular alarm due to the culvert’s proximity to a school. Locals highlighted the danger posed by an open drain left uncovered at the construction site, claiming a child recently fell into it but escaped serious injury.
Residents alleged that despite repeated complaints, no effective measures have been taken to address the problem. They have now urged the project implementing agency and the district administration to intervene immediately to ensure proper drainage and cover open drains before the monsoon intensifies.
