GSU seeks fresh probe into year old case of girl’s murder in EGH, criticises police

TURA, June 25: A year after a young girl was hacked to death in Samgong, the GSU East Zone Williamnagar has demanded a fresh independent inquiry and a Special Investigation Team (SIT) probe into the case. In a representation to Chief Minister Conrad Sangma on Thursday, the union slammed the Williamnagar police for failing to arrest the accused.
The union expressed concern that despite a completed magisterial inquiry, no action has been taken on its findings, and no officials have been held accountable for potential lapses. The GSU also highlighted that the victim’s family is yet to receive any compensation or support from the government.
Describing the delay as a failure of justice, the union noted that the accused has managed to evade arrest for over a year despite the “gruesome” nature of the crime.
The GSU has now urged the state government to intervene, release the Action Taken Report (ATR) of the initial inquiry, and constitute an SIT to thoroughly examine the case. The union further demanded that action be taken against any officials found negligent in their duties.
