SHILLONG, July 11: An organised gang of vehicle lifters appears to be operating with impunity across Meghalaya, with nine two-wheelers reported stolen from residential compounds and public parking lots within just six days. The thefts, occurring between July 4 and July 9, spanned East Khasi Hills, West Jaintia Hills, and West Garo Hills.
The frequency and variety of locations suggest a coordinated spree. In the most recent case on July 9, a motorcycle (ML-05Z-2084) belonging to Bayolroy Kharumnuid was stolen from his residence at Mawpdang, East Khasi Hills, at approximately 3 am.
Shillong remains the hardest hit, with the security of designated parking areas now under scrutiny. On July 5, Synjuklang Kharsyntiew’s scooter (ML-05AE-7812) was lifted from the Madanrting Lumjingsuk parking lot. Other thefts in the city include scooters taken from Jhalupara, Lower Mawprem, and Madanrting Mawblei, as well as motorcycles from Lumkhyriem and Mawlai Nonglum.
The thefts extended to other districts as well. In West Jaintia Hills, a scooter (ML-04D-4662) was stolen from a residence in Barato village on July 5. In West Garo Hills, Ranu Islam reported his motorcycle (AS-21M-7462) missing from near the Sub-Divisional (C) Court in Rajabala on July 7.
The pattern of these thefts—targeting both private residences and high-security zones like court vicinities and paid parking lots—indicates a significant breakdown in local security and the presence of professional lifters operating across the state.
Police are currently investigating the surge in reports.
