Birmingham, July 14: Jasprit Bumrah marked his return to One-Day International cricket in memorable fashion by scripting multiple milestones during the opening ODI against England at Edgbaston on Tuesday, becoming India’s most successful wicket-taker in the format on English soil.
Playing his first ODI after a gap of 968 days, the pace spearhead dismissed England captain Harry Brook to register his 150th wicket in the 50-over format. The breakthrough also saw Bumrah surpass Ravindra Jadeja’s tally of 30 wickets in England, taking his overall count in the country to 31 and making him the highest Indian wicket-taker in ODIs played in England.
Jadeja now occupies second place on the list with 30 wickets, followed by Bhuvneshwar Kumar (28), Madan Lal (27) and Mohammed Shami (26).
The dismissal of Brook also helped Bumrah achieve another significant landmark as he became the third-fastest Indian bowler to claim 150 ODI wickets in terms of deliveries bowled.
The right-arm pacer reached the milestone in just 4,605 deliveries, trailing only Mohammed Shami, who required 4,070 balls, and left-arm wrist spinner Kuldeep Yadav, who took 4,513 deliveries. Bumrah also moved ahead of former India pacers Ajit Agarkar (5,027 balls) and Irfan Pathan (5,131 balls) on the elite list.
Adding further gloss to an already decorated international career, Bumrah also entered an exclusive global club. He became only the third cricketer in international cricket history to complete the rare double of 200 Test wickets, 150 ODI wickets and 100 T20 International wickets.
The Indian fast bowler joined Bangladesh all-rounder Shakib Al Hasan and New Zealand seamer Tim Southee as the only players to achieve the feat across all three formats of the game.
Bumrah’s international numbers now stand at 234 wickets in Test cricket, 150 in ODIs and 121 in T20 Internationals, underlining his consistency and effectiveness across formats.
His latest achievement also reflects his outstanding record in English conditions, where he has consistently troubled opposition batters with his pace, accuracy and ability to extract movement.
In 17 ODI appearances in England, Bumrah has now claimed 31 wickets at an impressive average of 21.41 while maintaining an economy rate of just 4.44 runs per over.
His finest ODI performance also came in England during India’s 2022 tour, when he produced a sensational spell of 6 for 19 against the hosts, one of the best bowling figures by an Indian fast bowler in the country. (Agencies)
