Tillotama Shome calls out gender bias in cinema
Actress Tillotama Shome has questioned the gender bias surrounding the box office performance of women-led films, saying success or failure should be judged on individual films, not the gender of their lead actors. Speaking to IANS, she pointed out that male-led films also fail commercially, yet their performance rarely sparks debates about the viability of male-centric cinema. Citing successful actresses such as Kangana Ranaut, Taapsee Pannu, Vidya Balan, and Alia Bhatt, she said both male- and female-led films have seen hits and flops. Tillotama also criticised the frequent use of labels like “female director” and “female actor,” arguing that women should not be treated as exceptions. She currently stars as public prosecutor Madhura Banerjee in Netflix’s courtroom drama Ikka. (IANS)
