Actor Bhumi Pednekar has appealed to people across the country to support relief efforts for flood-affected Assam, highlighting the scale of devastation caused by the ongoing floods.
In a video shared on Instagram, she said more than 7.5 lakh people have been displaced, over 40 lives had been lost at the time of her appeal, and entire villages and livestock had been washed away.
Calling the situation “heartbreaking,” Bhumi urged citizens to donate food, mattresses, sanitation supplies and other essentials, while encouraging them to spread awareness.
She also recalled the nationwide solidarity shown during floods in Punjab, Jammu, Bihar and Maharashtra last year, expressing hope that people would once again come together to help those in need.
Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma’s office thanked Bhumi for extending support to the flood-hit state. On Sunday, the Chief Minister said the flood death toll had risen to 66 and announced a major relief initiative by the Assam BJP.
The party plans to distribute two lakh Mekhela-Chadors to women and clothing to two lakh children affected by the floods, requiring an estimated Rs 12 crore. Sarma appealed to BJP workers to contribute towards the relief fund.
According to the Assam State Disaster Management Authority (ASDMA), over 7.05 lakh people across 12 districts remain affected, with Sivasagar being the worst-hit district. (ANI)
