AHMEDABAD: The Congress has started making preparations for the Assembly polls in Gujarat, expecting that the elections scheduled to be held by December next year could be advanced by six months.

The party has decided to focus on the issue of corruption in the state as its campaign agenda.

“The Assembly elections in Gujarat could be held six months earlier than the schedule, so we have begun making preparations. This would ensure that our home work is done well in time,” chairman of Gujarat Congress Election Campaign Committee 2012 Shankersingh Vaghela said.

Congress president Sonia Gandhi had recently approved Vaghela’s name as the chairman of the election campaign committee of Gujarat for the upcoming Assembly polls.

“My apprehension is that Assembly polls could be held in June 2012, once the state government opts for dissolution of the Assembly, like it did in 2002,” he said.”In the wake of corruption charges against them (BJP), they fear that if they continue to remain in power more allegations will rise, therefore, for saving their face, the cabinet can demand early polls,” said Vaghela.

The Congress has proposed to launch its poll campaign in Gujarat from Kutch district on September 28.

“We shall begin the campaign by organising a maha-rally at Bhuj in Kutch, because the region has emerged as the epicentre of corruption of BJP-led government in Gujarat,” Vaghela said.

“In the garb of development, grazing (gouchar) land for animals in Kutch have been given to industrialists,” he alleged.

He also a released a booklet on the occasion, titled ‘Ghotala Hi Ghotala’, describing the alleged corruption in Gujarat by chief minister Narendra Modi and his cabinet.(PTI)
