Itanagar: Violence continued in this Arunachal Pradesh capital for the second day of the 48-hour bandh called by the All Nyishi Students Union (ANSU) bringing life to a halt on Tuesday.

At least two police vehicles were set on fire and another 13 government vehicles damaged, while the police fired tear gas shells to disperse agitators who, defying prohibitory orders under 144 CrPC, ransacked the horticulture directorate, Capital Complex SP Tamut Apang said.

As the police arrested a few from the spot, a large group of women blocked a highway demanding their release which forced the police to use water cannon to disperse them. But by then four police vehicles were damaged by the group, the SP told PTI.

The group also spread to various parts of the capital blocking roads, burning tyres, stone pelting, trying to set fire to forest and PWD offices and damaging parked vehicles in PWD chief engineer’s office, police said. A parked vehicle of a magistrate was also damaged at Naharlagun on Monday when the bandh started to protest against some reports in a section of the media in May against the community.

Tension ran high and the residents stayed indoors here while most of the offices were closed on Tuesday. (PTI)
