SHILLONG: Police on Wednesday thwarted an attempt by a section of High Court staff to stage a protest after authorities initiated disciplinary action against one of their colleagues.
Barring a few, the entire staff tried to abstain from regular duties expressing solidarity with one administrative staff B Nongbri against whom disciplinary action was taken on Tuesday.
The East Khasi Hills district administration had to intervene and shifted the protesters to the Sadar police station in view of Section 144 CrPC, which has in force in the area since last month, said the district police chief M Kharkrang.
Surprisingly, none of the agitating staff was willing to talk to media on the matter. While no one was arrested, Kharkrang said the agitators were later released after they agreed to resume their duties.
Registrar General of the High Court B Mawrie said “They tried to abstain from regular duties, but soon realised their mistakes they resolved the matter.”
In a statement Mawrie, however, said the court functioned smoothly as usual with the assistance of staff available.
Meanwhile, Shillong High Court Bar Association has condemned police action.
