‘Sayeedullah called us for compromise’

By Our Reporter

SHILLONG: Members of the Hynniewtrep Achik National Movement (HANM) on Saturday detained fifteen people who had entered the State without any valid documents.

The detained people hailing from Assam were detected near the Rapsang Group of industries along the Guwahati-Shillong National Highway on Saturday morning.

The HANM members alleged that these people had come to Shillong to work as labourers at a building construction site in Laban locality of the city but did not possess valid labour licenses.

In the midst of the allegations by the HANM members, the name of Rajabala legislator Sayeedullah Nongrum cropped up when HANM leaders claimed that the legislator had called them up for a ‘compromise’.

“He (Sayeedullah Nongrum) spoke to one of our members over phone and asked us to release the detained people. He even sought for compromise saying that he would produce the required documents later,” L Kharbani stated.

When contacted, Sayeedullah Nongrum totally denied the allegations stating that he had not called any of the detained labourers for any construction work in the State.

Taking strong note of the influx bid, the HANM leaders asked the State Government to implement the work permit without any further delay.

“We will continue to detect and evict migrant workers who enter the State without valid documents,” the HANM members added.

The detained persons were taken to Lumdiengjri police station from where they were escorted back to Assam.
