GUWAHATI/TURA: In a joint operation conducted by Goalpara based Army troops of Agia Brigade and Meghalaya police, two hardcore terrorists of A’chik Matgrik Elite Force (AMEF) were killed in a fierce encounter in the wee hours on Tuesday in the dense jungles of Meghalaya.
A defence spokesman said, the killed terrorists were identified as Akhi Momin and Selba Sangma. One factory made pistol, two single shot rifles, three live rounds, one machete and other war like stores were recovered during the operation.
The operation was carried out on the basis of intelligence input that four to five AMEF terrorists were present in a camp in Petchong Jonksi in North Garo Hills district of Meghalaya. The area lies along Assam – Meghalaya border, neighbouring Goalpara district of Lower Assam.
While approaching the camp, a group of about six terrorists were encountered. In a retaliatory fire, two of the terrorists were killed.
Another source, meanwhile, said two more persons of the same group were apprehended following the encounter. They are identified as Delnot Momin and Robin Momin. All four are said to be residents of the same village.
However, the events leading to the incident remain blurred with allegations surfacing that the four were innocent villagers who had just returned from a night of hunting and settled down near a paddy field to cook the venison they had shot when the security forces arrived on the scene and opened fire mistaking them for militants.
