TURA: A conglomerate of NGOs comprising of the GSU (Interim), GHSMC, AAYF and ASWA have submitted a memorandum to the GHADC CEM urging him to look into several “burning issues” including the codification of Garo Customary Laws.
Stating that the codification of Garo Customary Laws as drafted in 2009 under the chairmanship of Milton S Sangma has many objectionable points which contradict with the customs, traditions, usages and practices of the Garos, the NGOs urged the authority to completely do away with the Bill in the greater interest of the Garo community.
Reminding that the GHADC unlike the KHADC still has no separate law to prevent non-tribals from participating in the elections of the Council the NGOs urged the concerned authority to frame such laws to safeguard the rights of the indigenous tribals.
