Shanmuganathan urges scientists to develop cancer drugs from bio-resources

SHILLONG: Governor V. Shanmuganathan has urged scientists to develop drugs from bio-resources for curing cancer.
The Governor was addressing a gathering during the just concluded two-day national symposium on Bio resources and Sustainable Development and second National Bio resources and Sustainable Development Summit held in NEHU October 28-29.
There is rise in cases of cancer in Meghalaya and elsewhere in the Northeast and the suggestion of the Governor assumes significance in this context. The Governor also appealed to the scientists to undertake appropriate research to address the problem of crop failure in the country leading to farmers’ suicide.
Shanmuganathan appreciated the efforts of Department of Botany, NEHU and Institute of Bio resources and Sustainable Development (IBSD), Imphal for organizing such an important event where more than 200 scientists from different parts of the country participated.
He said that the symposium provided a platform where distinguished scientists from  all over the country and young researchers together deliberated on strategies for sustainable development of bio resources in the country.
The Governor interacted with the participating students, faculty members and scientists on the use of bio resources for sustainable development of the country.
The symposium was inaugurated by Prof. Sri Krishna Srivastava, Vice- Chancellor, NEHU, Shillong on October 28.
Tandon retires
During the symposium, the former Vice Chancellor and Padma Shree Pramod Tandon, Professor of Botany and an eminent scientist was felicitated on his superannuation from NEHU service.
