Inclusion of Khasi in Eighth Schedule

SHILLONG: The main committee constituted by the State Government to pursue the inclusion of Khasi language in the Eighth Schedule of the Indian Constitution is still awaiting the report of the sub-committee.
Informing this here on Sunday, member secretary of the main committee Director, Art and Culture department, Matsiewdor War said that the basic assignment which was given to the sub-committee was to try and find out the additional criteria required to be complied to for the language to find a place in the Eighth Schedule. The main committee will take the final call on the report to be submitted by the sub-committee before pursuing the matter with the Centre.
It may be mentioned that the four-member sub-committee has completed the compilation of the report.
Deputy Chief Minister in charge of Education, R.C. Laloo is the chairman of the main committee, which was notified on November 28 last year.
Other members of the committee include Urban Affairs Minister Ampareen Lyngdoh, UDP legislator Paul Lyngdoh, Congress legislator P.N. Syiem, HSPDP legislator Witting Mawsor, Principal Secretary in charge Art and Culture, P.W. Ingty, Dr. Sylvanus Lamare from the Sahitya Akademi, S. Dkhar, HoD, Khasi Dept, NEHU, MBOSE Executive Chairman, E.P. Kharbhih, former member of Sahitya Akademi, S. Quotient Sumer, Law Secretary, L.M. Sangma, representative from the Khasi Authors’ Society and former MP, B.R. Kharlukhi.
