Aircel denies dealing in illegal SIM cards

SHILLONG: Aircel North East Business Head, Nilaj Mahalanavis on Thursday said that the company is not indulging in any business of illegal SIM cards.
Addressing a press conference here on Thursday, Mahalanavis said that the company is duty bound to see that its SIM cards are not are not put in public domain illegally even as he added that Aircel is working with the law enforcing agencies to curb the menace of “black SIM cards”.
SIM cards sold in the black market have become a menace with militant outfits in Garo Hills using the SIM cards to carry out their operations.  Following such incidents the High Court of Meghalaya had issued an order that henceforth all mobile service providers – Aircel, Airtel, BSNL, Idea, Reliance & Vodafone – shall furnish information forthwith to the nearest police station if any SIM card activated by them is found operational in any part of the five districts of Garo Hills.
