Ex-Speaker Syiemiong no more

SHILLONG: Former Assembly Speaker and three-time legislator Winstone Syiemiong passed away on Tuesday afternoon at his residence at Laitumkhrah following a prolonged illness.
Syiemiong,78, is survived by his wife, five sons and one daughter.
His mortal remains will be laid to rest at the Church of God cemetery, Lawmali, here on January 7 at 1 pm.
Syiemiong was elected to Meghalaya Legislative Assembly three terms from Nongspung constituency soon after the formation of the state .
He had held the post of Assembly Speaker from 1978 to 1983 and was also elected as MDC for one term from Nongspung-Sohiong.
Syiemiong who passed Assam Civil Service was the founding president of Meghalaya State Badminton Association.
Assembly Speaker AT Mondal while condoling former legislator’s death has recalled his contributions to the state.
Former legislator and president of Meghalaya Forum of former MLAs, SD Khongwir said that death of Syiemiong has created a vacuum to the Forum.
Khongwir, a contemporary of Syiemiong recalled that as “Speaker, he raised the standard of the House to a spectacular position and as MLA he was a prominent achiever in politics”.
