Election for UDP top post on Feb 27
SHILLONG: With two working presidents of the party, Bindo Lanong and Paul Lyngdoh making the demand for change of leadership in the party as they aspire to contest for the post of the party president , there are other aspirants like Jemino Mawthoh and Titus Chyne whom the party considers as the potential leaders.
The election of the party president and other office bearers will be held on February 27.
A senior party leader said on Wednesday that though the party’s rank and file had approached Mawthoh to head the party, he refused to take over the mantle since he is new to the party.
“A section of the party members wanted Mawthoh to assume the top position of the party since he can deal with both the old and young leaders of the party,” the party leader said.
According to the party leader, Mawthoh, however, did not want to take up the task at this juncture.
The party leader also pointed out that another legislator Titus Chyne is also capable to leading the party and added that the UDP has no dearth of leaders.
Both Mawthoh and Chyne were not available for comments.
The UDP president Donkupar Roy recently said that it was upto the party to decide whether he should continue to hold the post or quit.
According to party sources, though many names are doing the rounds, the leadership issue will be decided by the nomination committee comprising presidents of districts and other frontal wings (youth wing, women’s wing, MLAs and MDCs).
