SHILLONG: The Hynniewtrep Youth Council (HYC) has asked the State Government to urge the Centre to appoint local people as judges in the High Court of Meghalaya.
A delegation of the HYC met Deputy Chief Minister in charge of Law, Rowell Lyngdoh in this regard on Thursday.
“A judge from Meghalaya would understand the unique local culture and tradition of the people in the state and hence should be given first preference (for appointment in the High Court of Meghalaya),” HYC president Peter Lawai told reporters here after the meeting adding that the Council is also not averse to the idea of appointing judges from other communities as long as they are residents of the state.
Lawai pointed out that the state already had around 8 to 9 senior advocates from the bar association and senior judges from the bench who are qualified to be judges of the High Court. Meanwhile, the Deputy Chief Minister assured the delegation that the matter would be examined by the Law department and discussed with the Chief Minister.
The HYC members also met leaders of the BJP’s state unit urging them to take up the proposal with the NDA-led Central Government.
Meanwhile, according to reports a Judge from New Delhi is likely to be appointed as the new judge of the High Court of Meghalaya.
