SHILLONG: As people in Meghalaya are apprehensive of the radiation emitting from mobile towers, the State Government is contemplating to use its own infrastructure to set up mobile towers of different mobile companies.
Informing this here on Wednesday during an interactive session on medico scientific examination of Health and Safety aspects of mobile telecommunications, co-chairman of the State Planning Board, John F Kharshiing said that time has come for Government to take such measures.
In the programme, leading doctors and telecom experts explained scientific facts pertaining to electromagnetic radio frequency (EMF), rejecting any relation between mobile tower radiation and cancer or other health hazards.
Leading panel of experts included Ramesh Teegala, Professor and Head Department (Neurosurgery), ASRAM Hospital, Eluru, Member Grace Cancer Foundation,SS Sirohi, former member (technology) among others.
The experts said health concerns from mobile tower radiation were not backed by scientific facts.
Reacting to a query, SS Sirohi, former member (technology), Telecom Commission, Government India said that around 2.60 lakhs BTS towers in the country have been audited and out of around 190 were found be violating the radiation limit even as he added that huge penalty has to paid by them for any defaults.
