SHILLONG: Expressing concern over rising crimes against women, members of the KSU girls’ wing met Home Minister Roshan Warjri on Friday to seek her intervention in the matter.
While speaking to reporters, Grace Lanong, president KSU, said, “Stringent laws should be framed against criminals committing crimes against women; they should be sentenced to 10 years’ rigorous imprisonment.”
She added that maintenance should be provided to the victim until she gets married or for her entire lifetime if she decides to stay unmarried.
The organization called for strong punitive actions against criminals as slow trials emboldens them to commit further crimes.
The organization advocated for awareness programmes to be conducted at remote areas of the State as well as a toll free number for women in need should be set up.
“Local women organizations should be encouraged to act as vigilant party,” Lanong said.
The organization demanded women’s cell in all outposts and police stations.
Fast track courts be made functional in certain pockets of the State for speedy trial in cases of rape and other crimes against women, she added.
She also appealed for reporting rape cases without any delay.
